Breaking Down Hydrogen’s Regulatory Maze – Marina Hritsyshyna

Our latest Energy Superhero is Marina Hritsyshyna, a Ukrainian born policy expert specializing in hydrogen regulation. Now based in Germany and pursuing a PhD in Finland, Marina brings a unique perspective on the evolving hydrogen sector, combining her background in law, energy regulation, and technical expertise. With over 12 years of experience in the energy sector and her own podcast called Clean Energy Talks, Marina is helping shape the hydrogen policies of tomorrow.

In this episode, Marina shares her insights on EU versus US policy, aviation fuels and what inspires her in this fast moving industry:

• Marina’s interest in hydrogen began in 2020 during her studies on natural gas regulation, where she explored the potential of renewable hydrogen. Since relocating to Germany in 2022, she has been actively involved in the hydrogen sector, focusing on policy development and certification of green hydrogen. 
• Marina compares the EU’s approach to hydrogen regulation with the U.S. Inflation Reduction Act, noting the effectiveness of production tax credits in bridging the cost gap between green and gray hydrogen. However, she points out that hydrogen prices in the EU remain high, requiring further policy interventions to make renewable hydrogen competitive.
• Hydrogen has many applications, including the development of sustainable aviation fuels (SAF). In the EU, the RefuelEU Aviation initiative mandates that airline operators use at least 2% SAF. Marina discusses the challenges of meeting these targets, given the current limitations in SAF production and distribution.
