The Tennessee Valley Authority is planning to build a historic amount of new gas and nuclear in the coming years, with 3.7 GW already under construction.
This is largely made possible by a billion dollar plus increase in operating revenue for the 2025 fiscal year, which now sits at $13.7 billion. That’s up from $12.3 billion for the previous year.
The huge gas build-out will include 1.4 GW of natural gas at the Cumberland Fossil Plant and an additional 1.4 GW at the Kingston Fossil Plant.
TVA is also planning four small modular reactors at the Clinch River Nuclear Site. The utility previously made an agreement with Type One Energy to develop a fusion power plant.
The utility is also planning 1.5 GW of battery storage by the end of 2029.
These projects couldn’t come at a more perfect time, considering TVA hit their all-time highest peak power demand in January at 35,430 MW.
As power demand continues to rise thanks to data centers and manufacturing, both additional generation and energy storage will become more and more necessary.
