The AI revolution is here, and it’s being powered by gas and nuclear. Big tech companies are increasingly turning to these resources to meet skyrocketing demand from AI and data centers.
For the first time in decades, electricity demand is again growing—and fast. Over the next 10 years, total demand is expected to increase by 15%.
According to Goldman Sachs, data centers alone will account for 8% of total U.S. electricity by 2030. We will need about 47 GW of additional capacity to meet this demand, according to analysts.
In the short term, tech companies are turning to gas for reliable and dispatchable energy. In the longer term, many have their sights set on nuclear.
Last year, NuScale Power made a deal with Standard Power to provide SMR’s for modular data centers. Others, like Meta, are now also looking at SMR’s as a viable option for their own data center power needs. Nuclear can both meet AI-driven electricity demand and emission reduction goals.
