Southwest Power Pool (SPP) has proposed something called the Expedited Resource Adequacy Study, or ERAS, to expedite new capacity additions to the grid. This one-time framework hopes to speed up generation interconnection in light of recent skyrocketing power demand.
Data centers and manufacturing are causing huge spikes in predicted energy usage. Surplus capacity in the area is expected to plummet to just 5% by 2029, a significant drop from 24% in 2020.
If ERAS is approved by federal regulators, project submission could begin as early as August and project approvals as early as April 2026. Applicants must be able to show that they can reach commercial operations within 5 years.
While interconnection reform is still necessary, this temporary measure will allow much needed generation to be added to the grid quickly. If utilities don’t act fast, we run the risk of the lights going out.
