Renewables developer Exowatt is branching into the data center industry. The Sam Altman-backed company is launching ExoRise, a business arm that will specifically focus on the land and infrastructure needs of hyperscalers.
The idea is to increase behind-the-meter capability, using solar and battery infrastructure to provide reliable power. Specifically, the company is pushing a technology called P3, which stores solar energy in the form of heat and converts it to electricity on demand.
The first targets will be in the Southwest, which has ample space and sunshine. States like New Mexico, Texas, Arizona and Nevada could see this technology first.
We need innovative solutions if we’re going to keep up with electricity demand. According to BloombergNEF, U.S. data center power demand could hit 106 GW by 2035.
Behind-the-meter solutions that don’t affect the grid will be a key piece of the puzzle.
