OpenAI has announced a plan to “pay its own way” to power Stargate data centers.
The goal is to prevent other ratepayers from carrying the financial burden of increasing power demand.
Depending on the location of the data center, the exact initiative will vary to best suit the needs of the community. This might include things like funding new dedicated power and storage, paying for new generation and transmission resources, or reducing demand during peak hours.
To accomplish this, OpenAI will need to work hand-in-hand with local utilities, transmission providers, regulators and regional grid operators. Already, some headway has been made, including in:
Wisconsin: development partners Oracle and Vantage Data Centers are building new energy generation and capacity (including solar and battery storage) alongside WEC Energy Group, underwriting the full cost of the infrastructure required
Michigan: development partners Oracle and Related Digital have financed a new battery storage project that will protect other customers from being affected by Stargate
Texas: OpenAI and SoftBank owned-SB Energy are paying for new energy generation and storage to provide the majority of power required for a 1.2GW Stargate data center
