Up to 3GW of new generation is being built in Indiana to power Amazon’s data centers.
GenCo, a Northern Indiana Public Service Co. (NIPSCO) affiliate, is planning two 1.3 GW gas-fired power plants and a 400-MW, 4‐hour battery storage system.
NIPSCO will be building any needed electric transmission. Together, the projects will cost about $7 billion.
This is a huge project for this region. To compare the magnitude, the expected load under NIPSCO for everything else apart from data centers is 2.3 GW.
The deal with Amazon will span 15 years and generate about $1 billion in savings for NIPSCO ratepayers. Under the approved framework, existing customers will receive a $7 monthly savings credit on their electricity bill. The emphasis here was on ensuring other consumers don’t pay for hyperscaler infrastructure.
