Amazon and Johnson Controls have joined forces with several other major corporations through the Sustainable Steel Buyers Platform (SSBP) to ramp up production of near-zero emissions steel.
This initiative seeks to drive down carbon emissions by using cleaner steel production. Currently, steel production accounts for around 7-9% of global CO2 emissions.
The platform has issued a tender for steel producers to supply over 1 million tons of near-zero emissions steel per year by 2028, which could cut up to 1.5 million metric tons of CO2 annually. This aligns with corporate climate commitments, like Amazon’s pledge to reach net-zero by 2040.
Transitioning to low-carbon or near-zero emissions steel plays a major part in reducing the industrial sector’s overall environmental impact, as steel is one of the largest single contributors to emissions globally.
