LS Power is planning to sell electricity to a 300-MW behind-the-meter data center in Virginia.
Power will be provided directly by two gas fired units at the company’s Doswell plant under a five year power purchase agreement. The project will support surging demand from AI and other high-power digital infrastructure.
But not everyone agrees. Old Dominion Electric Cooperative filed a protest against the proposition, stating that there is not enough research regarding the effects of taking power from the PJM Interconnection grid. Diverting power could lead to reliability and cost allocation issues, they say.
With data centers consuming so much power, utilities and grid operators need to figure out how to balance reliability, price, and rising demand.
