ICF Predicts U.S. Electricity Demand to Grow 25% by 2030, 78% by 2050

A new report from ICF is now predicting U.S. electricity demand could grow 25% by 2030 and 78% by 2050, compared to 2023 levels. This is a significant jump from their initial forecast, which predicted 9% load growth by 2028 and 18% by 2033.

Why the big increase? New data centers and industrial loads are largely to blame. The recent spike in AI and manufacturing reshoring is causing demand to grow much more quickly than previously expected.

In response, residential electricity rates are predicted to rise between 15% and 40% over the next five years and to possibly double by 2050. How do we combat such intense hikes?

We need more solutions, and fast. Things like demand response programs and energy efficiency investments can provide some near-term relief.

But according to ICF, we still need to double annual generation deployments to meet expected longer-term demand. Reliable and dispatchable sources like natural gas and nuclear are well equipped to bridge this gap.
