FERC recently ordered PJM to revise its grid interconnection process yet again, requiring significant updates to meet requirements.
FERC claims that parts of PJM’s process does not comply with Order 2023, which requires a “first-ready, first-served” cluster study approach, sets time limits for interconnection studies, and imposes other requirements to reduce queue wait times.
PJM will have 60 days to come up with a new plan. Updates need to include cost allocation for network upgrades, use of grid-enhancing technologies and more energy storage modeling.
PJM is one of the most stressed grids in the country, and home to the world’s largest data center market in Virginia. Having a reliable and efficient interconnection process will only become more and more essential in the coming years.
