Georgia Power Company expects electricity demand in the state to triple over the next decade, driven primarily by a large spike in data centers.
Data centers are becoming a major factor in energy consumption. As of right now, about 70 prospective data centers have pledged to purchase electricity from Georgia Power in the coming years. The company projects 36,500 megawatts in total load growth by the mid-2030s due to the current pipeline of economic development projects.
This creates both opportunities and challenges for Georgia. On one hand, the state is growing as a hub for technology and innovation. On the other, it needs significant investments in energy infrastructure to ensure reliability and affordability for customers.
Georgia Power has already received approval from state regulators to install more natural gas or oil-burning generators and solar batteries to meet increasing demand.
