By 2050, U.S. electricity demand is expected to grow by 50% based on a new study by the National Electrical Manufacturers Association.
What’s causing this big jump? Mostly data centers and transportation electrification. The study predicts that these sectors will drive demand about 2% higher annually over the next 25 years.
Some striking statistics found by NEMA:
- Data center energy consumption will grow 300% over the next decade
- E-mobility power demand will skyrocket by 9,000% through 2050
- Grid-connected energy storage will increase by 1,100% over the next 15 years
The truth is that our grid was not made for this rate of demand growth. In order to meet consumption needs, we will need to enact innovative technologies and smart policies. This includes things like improved interregional transmission, permitting reform, incentives for grid technologies, and a diversified energy portfolio.
