Duke Energy is planning a massive updated five year capital spending plan, estimated to be somewhere between $95 billion and $105 billion.
Currently, their five year plan allocates $87 billion, meaning new projects (reportedly with large load customers like data centers) are in the works.
Over this time period, the company plans to add over 13 GW of additional capacity. This new generation will cover 1 GW of upgrades and 7.5 GW of new natural gas, for which they have obtained 19 turbines. Additionally, they plan to add solar and battery storage projects.
This year alone, they have signed 3 GW worth of energy agreements with data centers. Duke says they expect this sort of rapid expansion to continue into the early 2030s.
