Data Center Construction Down 17% Due to Lagging Power Supplies

Despite demand, U.S. data center construction was actually down 17% in the first half of 2025.

Why? Lagging power supplies. Electrical infrastructure is struggling to keep up with the jump in large load customers.

In the first half of the year, a total of 5,242 MW worth of data centers were under construction. That’s a 17% drop from 6,350 MW in 2024.

At the same time, data center investments plummeted by more than half to under $1 billion. Some tech giants like Microsoft and Amazon Web Services have slowed or even completely paused growth this year.

New data center builds have been popping up all across the country. But they are useless unless they can get the power they need to run their servers.

If we can’t fix our power supply problem, regions across the country are going to miss out attracting critical investments in their economy. Plus, we run the risk of falling behind when it comes to AI dominance and national security. Procuring the power we need is not a nice-to-have, it’s a must.
