Maryland could soon be seeing two new natural gas plants from Constellation Energy, and much faster than usual.
Regulators just agreed to fast track the review of the facilities, which together would bring about 700 megawatts of new gas capacity into the state.
With this expedited process, Constellation could potentially expedite the vetting process to under 10 months. Typically, approval in Maryland could take up to two years.
Like many states throughout the country, Maryland is looking to increase its electricity generation capacity. With the influx of high demand industries like data centers and manufacturing, the state is seeing tightened margins on power reserves and increased consumer bills.
According to the Public Service Commission order, the proposed plants would increase Maryland’s natural gas capacity by 14% if approved.
