GE Vernova’s H-Class gas turbines are now operational at Shenzhen Energy Group’s Guangming power plant in Guangdong Province, China. Capable of producing 2 GW of electricity, the plant will service an area of approximately 127 million people. The 9HA.01 gas turbines will be combined with Harbin Electric’s steam turbines and generators.
This announcement brings up some important points. It’s clear that the need for reliable, dispatchable energy is only growing globally. Much of this demand growth is a result of AI technologies and power hungry data centers.
Today, AI is becoming critical for national security, and electricity is food for AI. Therefore, it can be said that electricity is also critical for national security. We need to be focused on increasing power generation capacity. In the near-term, the best option for doing so is natural gas. It’s reliable, proven, scalable, and the technology is here now. Natural gas is a great option for today until nuclear power and other next generation technologies are ready to take on a larger share of the energy mix.
