The U.S. Army is taking a big step toward energy resilience, with plans to deploy its first nuclear microreactors on domestic bases by 2028.
This initiative, known as the Janus program, will diversify power supplies and create energy independence.
Bases will be directly connected to nuclear supplies, cutting out the grid middleman. Access to microreactors will eliminate vulnerabilities of grid-connected power, which is becoming increasingly stressed as demand across the country soars from data centers and industry.
The reactors will be commercially owned-and-operated, with likely several companies chosen to manufacture the units. Prototypes will be delivered and deployed at nine DOD sites across the country.
Throughout history, the military has often been a catalyst for technological adoption. Advancements here could potentially pave the way for broader commercial and industrial use of microreactors in the coming years.
