$366M Data Center Project Longhorn Filed in Texas
A $366 million data center project, dubbed "Project Longhorn – Building One," has been filed with the Texas Department of Licensing and Regulation for Cedar Creek, Bastrop County, Texas. The 498,165 sq ft facility is the first building in what is reportedly a larger campus that AI lab Anthropic is in talks to lease. The project is supposedly supported by a proposed 2,842-acre gas-fired generation facility—with 710 MW of site-rated redundant power from simple-cycle turbines supporting 490 MW of IT capacity—developed by Pacifico Energy, with Black Chamber Partners as the data center developer. Involved parties have not officially confirmed this. Construction is set to begin November 30, 2026, with completion by January 2028, proceeding despite Governor Greg Abbott's September halt on new data center permits pending an ERCOT audit.
Project Star $22B Data Center & Power Campus Planned for Texas
Lewis Energy Group, Related Digital, and NextEra Energy Resources are partnering to develop Project Star, a $22 billion data center and power campus in Encinal, Texas, southwest of San Antonio. The project, announced alongside the U.S. Department of Commerce and the South Korean government, will be jointly owned through an investment structure established under a U.S.-South Korea trade agreement. Lewis Energy will supply land, natural gas, and water infrastructure; NextEra will develop and operate a natural gas generation facility, with excess power sold into ERCOT; and Related Digital will develop the data center campus. Power generation is expected online as soon as 2029. No tenant has been announced.
Making AI Data Centers Grid-Friendly – Arushi Sharma Frank
Our latest Energy Superhero is Arushi Sharma Frank, a grid expert, policy advocate, and founder of Luminary Strategies, a venture studio focused on energy & AI technology. With deep experience in ERCOT market design and a knack for bridging the gap between large loads and grid reliability, Arushi is today tackling one of the most pressing challenges of the AI era. How do we connect massive data centers to the power grid without compromising reliability or breaking the bank?
Listen on SpotifyFervo Signs 396 MW PPA with Google
Fervo Energy has signed a 396-megawatt power purchase agreement with Google to supply geothermal power from its Utah project. This deal represents one of the largest enhanced geothermal deals to date and underscores the growing appetite among hyperscalers for firm, carbon-free generation that can support 24/7 data center operations without relying on intermittent renewables or fossil fuel backup.
U.S. DOE to Spend $1.9B on Transmission Projects Across 26 States
The U.S. Department of Energy announced $1.9 billion in funding for grid infrastructure projects spanning 26 states and covering nearly 21,000 miles of transmission and distribution systems. The funding targets reliability improvements and capacity expansion to accommodate surging electricity demand driven by data centers, manufacturing reshoring, and electrification.
Amazon Signs $8B Deal for Generac’s Backup Generators
Amazon has signed an $8 billion deal with Generac to supply backup generators for its data center operations, with initial deliveries totaling $2.4 billion over the next two years. This comtinues to show a strategic shift toward self-supplied resilience and grid independence among hyperscalers. The deal also allows Amazon to acquire up to nearly 1.7 million shares of Generac stock for approximately $200 per share over time, with 300,000 shares available immediately.
New Era Signs PPA with Vistra Subsidiary to Power 250MW Texas Data Center
New Era has executed a 20-year power purchase agreement with a Vistra subsidiary to supply electricity to a 250MW data center campus in Ector County, Texas. The deal represents a growing trend of hyperscale data center operators securing long-term, dedicated dispatchable generation rather than relying on grid interconnection and merchant power markets.
Hull Street Energy Acquires Two PJM Natural Gas Plants
Hull Street Energy (HSE), a private equity firm focused on power infrastructure, has completed the acquisition of two natural gas peaking plants totaling 1,263 MW in the PJM market from Rockland Capital. The assets—Lee County Generating Station (677 MW) in Illinois and Tait Electric Generating Station (586 MW, dual-fuel) in Ohio—will join HSE's Milepost Power thermal generation platform. With this acquisition, HSE now owns nearly 5,000 MW of dispatchable generation capacity, making it one of the largest privately held power producers in the U.S. Financial terms were not disclosed.
Evergy Plans New Gas to Support Kansas Data Centers
Evergy, the Kansas-based regulated utility, has announced plans to build a 910 MW large simple cycle gas turbine and accompanying battery storage projects to meet surging data center demand driven by AI infrastructure buildout. The filing represents one of the clearest signals yet that Midwest utilities are moving aggressively to capture hyperscale load growth, deploying dispatchable generation at scale to meet the reliability and capacity requirements AI workloads demand.
TerraPower Announces Second Nuclear Plant
TerraPower, the Bill Gates-backed advanced nuclear company, plans to announce its second utility-scale nuclear power plant project before the end of 2026. The company is currently the only developer constructing a new utility-scale nuclear facility in the United States—the Natrium sodium-cooled fast reactor in Kemmerer, Wyoming. A second project announcement would signal that advanced nuclear is moving from demonstration to commercial deployment and that TerraPower has secured additional offtake or partnership commitments.
NextEra Gets $3.3B for 10GW of New Natural Gas Generation
NextEra Energy has secured $3.3 billion in state financing to develop 10 GW of new natural gas generation capacity across two projects in Texas and Pennsylvania, explicitly targeting growing data center power demand. Specifically, the funding will support the $17 billion South Mon project in Pennsylvania, which is expected to add 4.3GW of gas-fired capacity in the Mon Valley region.
Form Energy Raises $750M for 100-Hour Batteries
Form Energy closed a $750 million Series G funding round for its 100-hour iron-air battery systems. The capital will fund expanded manufacturing capacity to deliver multi-day energy storage systems designed for grid-scale and behind-the-meter applications. This marks a critical inflection point for long-duration energy storage in AI infrastructure and data center power markets.
