$366M Data Center Project Longhorn Filed in Texas
A $366 million data center project, dubbed "Project Longhorn – Building One," has been filed with the Texas Department of Licensing and Regulation for Cedar Creek, Bastrop County, Texas. The 498,165 sq ft facility is the first building in what is reportedly a larger campus that AI lab Anthropic is in talks to lease. The project is supposedly supported by a proposed 2,842-acre gas-fired generation facility—with 710 MW of site-rated redundant power from simple-cycle turbines supporting 490 MW of IT capacity—developed by Pacifico Energy, with Black Chamber Partners as the data center developer. Involved parties have not officially confirmed this. Construction is set to begin November 30, 2026, with completion by January 2028, proceeding despite Governor Greg Abbott's September halt on new data center permits pending an ERCOT audit.
Project Star $22B Data Center & Power Campus Planned for Texas
Lewis Energy Group, Related Digital, and NextEra Energy Resources are partnering to develop Project Star, a $22 billion data center and power campus in Encinal, Texas, southwest of San Antonio. The project, announced alongside the U.S. Department of Commerce and the South Korean government, will be jointly owned through an investment structure established under a U.S.-South Korea trade agreement. Lewis Energy will supply land, natural gas, and water infrastructure; NextEra will develop and operate a natural gas generation facility, with excess power sold into ERCOT; and Related Digital will develop the data center campus. Power generation is expected online as soon as 2029. No tenant has been announced.
Making AI Data Centers Grid-Friendly – Arushi Sharma Frank
Our latest Energy Superhero is Arushi Sharma Frank, a grid expert, policy advocate, and founder of Luminary Strategies, a venture studio focused on energy & AI technology. With deep experience in ERCOT market design and a knack for bridging the gap between large loads and grid reliability, Arushi is today tackling one of the most pressing challenges of the AI era. How do we connect massive data centers to the power grid without compromising reliability or breaking the bank?
Listen on SpotifyCrusoe Files for Two Data Center Buildings in Texas, Totaling $4.8B
Crusoe Energy has filed plans for a $4.8 billion data center campus in Jayton, Texas, featuring two data center facilities likely connected to the company's existing project in Childress. The development demonstrates Crusoe's strategy of scaling modular, gas-powered compute infrastructure in rural markets with stranded energy resources.
Amazon Signs $8B Deal for Generac’s Backup Generators
Amazon has signed an $8 billion deal with Generac to supply backup generators for its data center operations, with initial deliveries totaling $2.4 billion over the next two years. This comtinues to show a strategic shift toward self-supplied resilience and grid independence among hyperscalers. The deal also allows Amazon to acquire up to nearly 1.7 million shares of Generac stock for approximately $200 per share over time, with 300,000 shares available immediately.
New Era Signs PPA with Vistra Subsidiary to Power 250MW Texas Data Center
New Era has executed a 20-year power purchase agreement with a Vistra subsidiary to supply electricity to a 250MW data center campus in Ector County, Texas. The deal represents a growing trend of hyperscale data center operators securing long-term, dedicated dispatchable generation rather than relying on grid interconnection and merchant power markets.
JPMorgan is Arranging $5 Billion in Debt for Volta
JPMorgan Chase has arranged $5 billion in debt financing for Volta Energy, a data center developer focused on AI-ready infrastructure. The financing structure mirrors traditional project finance models used for regulated infrastructure assets like toll roads and power generation facilities, with debt carrying the majority of the capital stack rather than equity. The deal represents a significant shift in how capital markets are treating hyperscale data center development — as predictable, infrastructure-grade assets worthy of utility-like leverage ratios.
Bitdeer’s $4.7B Deal with Volta Infrastructure Supports Anthropic
Bitdeer Technologies announced a 16-year, $4.7 billion physical infrastructure colocation agreement with Volta for a new data center campus designed to support AI workloads, reportedly tied to Anthropic's compute requirements. The deal represents one of the largest long-duration colocation contracts disclosed in the AI infrastructure buildout.
Amazon Adds Third Data Center Campus in Louisiana
Amazon announced a third data center campus in Louisiana, bringing its total investment in the state to $18 billion. The expansion includes 750 full-time data center jobs and 2,500 additional positions across construction and operations. The announcement signals Louisiana's emergence as a major hyperscaler destination and creates immediate demand for dispatchable generation capacity.
PJM Files Proposal to Push Data Centers Offline During Emergencies
PJM Interconnection, the largest grid operator in the United States, filed a proposal with FERC to force data centers offline during grid emergencies as part of a plan to address a 6.8 gigawatt reliability shortfall. The filing comes on the heels of PJM's recent capacity auction that cleared at $325 per megawatt-day, reflecting severe supply-demand imbalances driven by AI-related load growth. The proposal would give PJM authority to curtail data center load during emergency conditions, fundamentally changing the reliability calculus for hyperscale operators.
Evergy Plans New Gas to Support Kansas Data Centers
Evergy, the Kansas-based regulated utility, has announced plans to build a 910 MW large simple cycle gas turbine and accompanying battery storage projects to meet surging data center demand driven by AI infrastructure buildout. The filing represents one of the clearest signals yet that Midwest utilities are moving aggressively to capture hyperscale load growth, deploying dispatchable generation at scale to meet the reliability and capacity requirements AI workloads demand.
Nvidia Commits Up To $105B For OpenAI’s Ohio Data Center
Nvidia has agreed to commit up to $105 billion to support SB Energy's development of a massive data center campus in Ohio that OpenAI has agreed to lease, according to a regulatory filing reported by Bloomberg. Separately, Nvidia will invest $1.5 billion directly in SB Energy, SoftBank's energy development arm. The deal marks a fundamental shift in how AI chipmakers are engaging with the power and real estate stack.
