Zap Energy, a Washington-based startup developing fusion power technology, recently secured $130 million in Series D funding.
This brings Zap Energy’s total capital raised to $327 million, positioning it among the top fusion startups by investment.
Zap Energy uses something called “sheared flow stabilized Z-pinch” technology. It can deliver cost-effective fusion energy without the need for expensive magnets or lasers, which are usually required to create fusion conditions.
The company will generate 50 megawatts of power per unit, enough to supply electricity to 50,000-60,000 homes. This could be scaled by combining multiple reactors to meet larger energy demands.
Key investors in this round include lead Soros Fund Management with participation from new investors BAM Elevate, Emerson Collective, Mizuho Financial Group, Plynth Energy, and Xplor Ventures. Existing investors include Breakthrough Energy Ventures, Chevron Technology Ventures, DCVC, Energy Impact Partners, Lowercarbon Capital, and Shell Ventures.
