UK-based Nscale is acquiring American Intelligence & Power Corporation, including the 2,250 acre Monarch Compute Campus in West Virginia.
The site has 8 GW total capacity planned, with the first 2GW phase online by 2028. For context, that’s larger than many nuclear power plants.
Microsoft has signed a letter of intent for 1.35GW of AI compute capacity at the site, which is expected to house “one of the world’s largest AI factories”.
Power will be provided by an onsite microgrid with future grid interconnection options.
Daniel Shapiro, now Chief Power Officer at Nscale, put it well: “The vision was always to build the vertically integrated power-and-compute model that this combination achieves instantly.”
Power and compute are no longer separate conversations. And the companies that can deliver both, integrated and affordably, are the ones that win.
