Talen Energy has just made a power purchase agreement with Amazon, planning to sell 1.9 GW from the Susquehanna nuclear plant.
The energy will be used for Pennsylvania data centers. This deal is considered “front of the meter,” meaning that it doesn’t necessitate approval from the Federal Energy Regulatory Commission.
Over the lifetime of the contract, Talen will earn roughly $18 billion in revenue. The contract runs through 2042, and will deliver up to 1,200 MW by 2029 and 1,920 MW by 2032.
This is just one of many steps the pair are taking to fulfill data center energy needs. The companies have also discussed building small modular reactors (SMRs) in Pennsylvania, or getting more capacity out of the Susquehanna plant through uprates.
