South Korean company Doosan Enerbility will provide two 380 MW gas turbines to an undisclosed major U.S. tech company. This is a big step for South Korea, which has previously been reliant on other countries for importing gas turbines. Now, they are exporting their own.
This is Doosan’s first overseas export deal, but will likely not be the last. The company has been putting in the time and resources needed to increase domestic production. They are only the fifth in the world to create their own gas turbine technology.
The U.S. deal was pushed along by Doosan’s American subsidiary, Doosan Turbomachinery Services, which will be in charge of maintaining the turbines once they are operational in the States.
This is a big deal, considering the U.S. is a leader in the global gas turbine market. American manufacturers are no longer able to keep up with demand, with wait times stretching years.
The data center industry is a major driver. For example, Siemens Energy North America alone has seen 14 GW worth of turbine orders so far this fiscal year, with 65% of that coming from data centers.
