NRG Energy has entered into a $12 billion cash and common stock acquisition deal with LS Power.
NRG will double their generation capacity, adding 18 natural gas-fired plants from LS Power to their portfolio. The total capacity of the plants is about 13 GW, which are located across nine states.
NRG will also be acquiring CPower Energy, a commercial and industrial virtual power plant (C&I VPP) platform. CPower holds 6 GW of capacity and has operations across all deregulated energy markets in the country.
The majority of NRG’s load is seen in the Northeast and Texas, where these newly acquired plants are located. This additional gas generation could really help with increased demand thanks to things like data centers and manufacturing.
