MidAmerican Energy Company, Iowa’s largest energy provider, has proposed a new $600 million 465MW natural gas plant and 800MW of solar energy generation.
Like many regions across the country, Iowa has seen increasing energy demands. Much of this demand comes from AI, data centers, electric vehicles, and other growing sectors.
The six new solar energy sites will generate enough energy to power 144,000 homes annually. The projects will be developed over 2027 and 2028.
During energy demand peaks, the two new gas turbines at the proposed Orient Energy Center will fill in the power gaps. The peaker plant is expected to create 400 construction jobs over two years.
More and more, natural gas is looking like a good near-term solution for meeting increased energy demands.
