Elon Musk’s xAI just got the green light in Mississippi to install 41 gas turbines at a former Duke Energy site in Southaven.
The new generation will power the company’s current Colossus 2 and upcoming Colossus 3 data centers. This is yet another example of a hyperscaler saying “we’ll handle it ourselves.”
Here’s what jumps out:
- The scale. 1.2 GW from a single permit, all dedicated to AI compute. xAI says this unlocks self-generating power capacity and ensures ratepayers don’t pay a cent for their energy needs.
- The timeline is aggressive. xAI bought the data center land in March 2025, and the power plant land in July 2025. Colossus 2 came online January 2026. Now the Clean Air Act permit is approved. We’re talking months, not years, from concept to power (much faster than relying on utilities alone).
It’s clear the current grid model simply can’t keep up with demand. Many hyperscalers are looking to secure their own power as a result.
