xAI’s data centers will require enormous amounts of power, so much so that Elon Musk is reportedly planning to buy overseas power plants and ship them over to the U.S.
The current xAI Colossus AI supercomputer already uses 200,000 Nvidia chips that eat up 300 MW of electricity. It’s been hard for the company to keep up with that level of power demand.
The next facilities will only draw even more, with 1 million AI GPUs and up to 2 GW of energy required. That’s enough to power 1.9 million homes.
So why look overseas? Right now, building or acquiring a power plant in the U.S. simply takes too long. AI growth is no longer limited by computing hardware or technological advancements alone, but on available power supplies.
If we can’t find a way to supply data centers with the electricity they need, we will be left behind in the global AI race.
