Captura, an ocean-based carbon capture startup, has raised $21.5 million, expanding its Series A funding.
Founded at the California Institute of Technology, Captura’s technology extracts CO2 from seawater, enhancing the ocean’s capacity to absorb atmospheric CO2.
The company currently operates two pilot plants in California, and is collaborating with Equinor for a third in Norway. This new plant will be installed at the end of the year and be able to draw down 1000 tons of CO2 annually.
This funding supports Captura’s move towards large-scale commercial deployment, with plants aiming to capture tens of thousands of tons of CO2 every year.
